REEVES PROPOSES I-55 WIDENING FUNDS FOR DESOTO COUNTY
The first step in what DeSoto County drivers have been hoping for years for appears to be on its way. Thursday morning, Gov. Tate Reeves announced on his Facebook page his proposal to improve infrastructure and site development in the state.
SUPERVISORS REACT TO REEVES' WIDENING PROPOSAL
DeSoto County leaders expressed gratefulness and were pleased that Gov. Tate Reeves included the widening of I-55 in his $1.3 billion proposal for infrastructure and development improvements in Mississippi. Nearly $125 million of that amount would go to widening I-55 from Goodman to Church Road in Southaven, the first phase in a three-phase plan to add more lanes between Southaven and Hernando.
HOPKINS ANNOUNCES CANDIDACY FOR STATE SENATE
Mississippi state Rep. Steve Hopkins (R-Southaven), who earlier announced he was not running for reelection, will instead be a candidate for state Senate.
GUNASEKARA RESIDENCY CHALLENGE DENIED BY GOP COMMITTEE
Northern District Transportation Commissioner Republican candidate Mandy Gunasekara Thursday learned the state Republican Party Executive Committee was denying a challenge to her qualifications. Hernando attorney Matthew Barton, himself a Republican candidate for DeSoto County District Attorney, had sent a letter to the Executive Committee challenging Gunasekara’s residency to allow her to be on the ballot.
HERNANDO ALDERMEN HONOR FORMER BOARD MEMBER NORWOOD
At the most recent Hernando Board of Aldermen meeting, the board approved a resolution honoring the late Walter “Gene” Norward, a former Hernando alderman who passed away from COVID-19 in November 2020. Norwood was a lifelong resident of Hernando and was active in the real estate business in DeSoto County for many years. Members of the Board of Aldermen, along with Mayor Chip Johnson, recently visited with Mrs. Janie Norwood to present her with the city’s proclamation.
